5.9-magnitude quake hits south of Java, Indonesia

JAKARTA, May 17 (Xinhua) — An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted south of Java, Indonesia, at 07:14 Jakarta time (00:14 GMT) on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 22.20 km, was initially determined to be at 9.25 degrees south latitude and 112.57 degrees east longitude.

It is 140 km south of Malang, Java, and 718 km southeast of Jakarta. There were no immediate report of casualty or damage.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
